RECC uses text messaging and automated telephone calls to let members in specific areas know about planned outages, as well as the cause of unexpected outages and other information that may affect their service. Called Notify 24, the program is a way to help members understand what’s going on with their electric system.
Text messages have been the most popular means of communication among our members. Text messages can be sent very quickly, and read at a phone owner’s choice of time and location. With texting, we can often send out a notice while an outage is still happening, and give members an idea of the severity and expected recovery time.
To make text messaging work, we need three things from a member:
- Your phone number
- The name of your wireless service provider
- Permission to text to that number
Some members still prefer to receive phone calls, but they can take some time with the limited number of phone lines available. When dozens or hundreds of members are affected, it’s impossible to get the word out to everyone quickly. Phone calls can be directed to land line phones or mobile numbers.
