For members with central air conditioning and an electric water heater, a Peak Switch can reduce monthly electric bills. The Peak Switch enables the cooperative to cycle an air conditioner’s operation on some summer days (15 minutes on / 15 minutes off), or turn off electric water heater elements on any day of the year. This load control enables us to reduce our monthly peak demand, which lowers our cost of wholesale power.
For air conditioners on a Peak Switch, a $10 credit is given on the member’s electric bill for the months of May, June, July, August and September. This is a total savings of $50 a year on air conditioning. For electric water heaters, a monthly credit of $7 is given on the electric bill, for an annual savings of $84.
With a new wholesale power contract set to begin in January 2018, our need to use Peak Switches will be greatly reduced. We are not installing new Peak Switches at members’ homes, and we may not choose to re-connect Peak Switches that are disconnected due to equipment change outs or other wiring changes in a home.
