Federal Tax Credits

Energy Efficient Home
The federal government is allowing a tax credit of 30% of the cost for eligible residential energy efficiency measures, up to a total credit of $1,500. These measures must be "placed in service" from Jan. 1, 2009 through Dec. 31, 2010. The maximum amount does not apply to geothermal heat pumps, or solar or wind energy systems.

The federal tax credits are available for qualified measure which include:
* Heating and cooling systems
* Insulation and air sealing
* Energy Star water heaters
* Windows, doors and roofing

Your contractor or retailer should provide a certification that the product or installation meets the minimum requirements for the tax credit. This certificate is needed in case your return is questioned by the Internal Revenue Service.

A point-of-sale rebate of 15% on Energy Star-qualified clothes washers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers and room air conditioners was to be held April 16 - April 25, but demand was so high that funds were exhausted in just one day!
